What is Medicare?

Medicare is a government health insurance program administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare is the largest health insurance service in the country, with around 40 million Americans participating. To be eligible you must be a citizen of the United States and meet certain requirements. If you are not a citizen of the United States, you can contact the Social Security Administration office to learn if you would be eligible.

Can you answer yes to at least one of the following statements?
  • I am 65 years of age or older.
  • I am under 65, but I have certain disabilities.
  • I have End-Stage Renal Disease (kidney failure that requires a transplant or dialysis).

If so, then you are likely to be eligible for Medicare benefits.

Medicare Changes in 2012

  • Asset levels increased for some Medicaid programs to level of LIS (Low Income Subsidy).  New levels are $6,940 (Ind) and $10,410 (Couple)
  • No late enrollment penalty for PDP (Prescription Drug Plan) with LIS
  • New Medicap plan M and N, with higher cost sharing.  Maybe lower premiums.
  • Welcome to Medicare Physical time extended 6 months to one year.
  • LIS application changes:
    • Cash value of life insurance & in-kind support (help from others) not counted.

Medicare SHIP Counselors educate and assist Medicare beneficiaries and caregivers.
Counselors are not affiliated with any insurance plan.

Help Paying Part-B Premium

Medicare Part-B expenses can be paid for qualifying individuals:

  • Based on income and resources
  • Must Have Medicare Part A
